Game Recap: Pistons Dominate Magic for First Win of Season
The Detroit Pistons(1-1) defeated the Orlando Magic(0-2) 108-82 on Friday night, as Detroit captured their first win of the season.
Andre Drummond had six points and 15 rebounds at the end of the first half. Ish Smith had 10 points and six assists. Detroit held Orlando to 28% shooting in the first half, as they lead at the end of the first half 54-31. Detroit used a 20-2 run to open up the game in the first half. The team as a whole played very well on both sides of the ball. They moved the ball on offense and their defense was top-notch. Detroit outscored Orlando 30-9 in the 2nd quarter.
It did not get better for the Magic in the 2nd half. Detroit continued to fire on all cylinders, while the Magic clanked shot after shot. Orlando did, however, play a nice fourth quarter, although the game was already out of hands, outscoring the Pistons 31-22 in the final twelve minutes.
The Magic were led by Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton. Gordon had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Payton started the game off hot and eventually cooled off. He finished with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Mario Hezonja also contributed 13 points. The Magic did not shoot the ball well. They shot34.7% from the field, 30.8% from the three-point line, and only 66.7% from the free throw line. Those are not winning numbers. Their offense was discombobulated the entire game, with little to none space. Serge Ibaka and Bismack Biyombo combined for six points in 41 minutes. The Magic only had 20 assists, compared to the Pistons 27.
Detroit played well throughout the entire game. Andre Drummond picked up his first double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 20 rebounds in only 27 minutes. Tobias Harris had 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Marcus Morris finished with 17 points on 2-5 shooting from deep.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was the only Detroit starting not to score in double figures, as he finished with five points. Ish Smith was fantastic, scoring 16 points and assisting on 8 shots, while only committing one turnover in 26 minutes.
Tobias Harris was happy with the way Smith played:
“He look really comfortable.”
The bench also produced very well for Detroit. Aron Baynes and Beno Udrih scored 13 points apiece. Jon Leuer played 28 minutes, scoring seven points and grabbing nine boards in the win.
Tobias Harris spoke about the Pistons win:
“We had a great effort offensively and defensively. We got stops and were able to push (the ball). We were locked in and focused.” “He look really comfortable.”
Detroit will play next on Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks 0-1, but they play the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday before they play Detroit.
