Tonight is the first of what will be a series of meetings between Pistons owner Tom Gores and President/Coach Stan Van Gundy, in which they will discuss the future of the franchise. Although no one is sure what exactly will happen, Gores has been adamant that there will be changes.
“We got to make some changes,” Gores said. “I’m just not sure what they are and he’s been working the whole season so I need to hear from Stan. I can tell you he’s an extremely dedicated man so I think he’s been good for our franchise. “That I know for sure.”
At this point, the Pistons have three options with SVG. The Pistons could keep him for his final year of his contract, they could fire him, or they could relieve him of his front office responsibilities to let him focus on coaching (similar to Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers).
Most believe Van Gundy will not be fired at this point but if they do there is a strong list of suitable coaches available such as David Fizdale, Mark Jackson and ex-Piston Jerry Stackhouse.
Overall, the best option for the Pistons is to keep Stan Van Gundy one more year to see what he can do with a healthy Reggie Jackson (hopefully) and a full season of Blake Griffin. However, Van Gundy should be relieved of his front office responsibilities which will allow him to spend more time on the “x’s and o’s” of coaching. Hopefully, like Doc in LA, this will have a positive effect on the Pistons gameplan and future. As far as a timeline, a decision is expected to be made by midweek.
