Sekou Doumbouya.
That’s all there is to say.
In the midst of Andre Drummond trade rumors, a likely season-ending surgery for Blake Griffin, and other injuries to Reggie Jackson and Luke Kennard, the Pistons were looking for a spark. Instead of immediately pushing the button on a trade to shake things up, head coach Dwane Casey inserted 19-year-old Sekou Doumbouya into the starting lineup.
This rotation-altering move has proven not only to be successful but a signal that the organization is beginning to think differently about this season. Instead of making this season another race to the eighth seed, they seem to be set on developing the roster’s youth, including giving increased roles to Svi Mykhailiuk, Christian Wood, along with Doumbouya.
Doumbouya absolutely posterized Tristan Thompson last night, putting his name on the map for the first time in his young career.
The excitement surrounding Sekou is a way to watch the Pistons through rose-colored glasses, to look on the bright side. Accept this season’s fate, prepare for likely roster moves, and run it back next season with some new faces, along with this team’s young guys that will be one year further in their development.
