2020 second round pick Saben Lee is returning to the Detroit Pistons on a 3 year deal (the exact numbers of this deal hasn’t been reported just yet, but this be updated once that information has been revealed).
Along with Frank Jackson and Hamidou Diallo, Lee was given a qualifying offer July 31st, making all 3 of these young guards restricted free agents. Saben Lee averaged 5.6 PPG, 2 RPG, 3.6 APG and almost 3 vicious dunks least season. He was able to compile these stats in a role found after the point guard position saw multiple injuries and player swapping, which is impressive considering if the club elected to send their team to the G League bubble Lee would’ve been on that team rather than the Pistons.
Saben is set to come off the bench in this season’s summer league right behind fellow teammate and draftie Killian Hayes and first overall pick Cade Cunningham. Lee has an opportunity to really show out in this summer league seeing has he was able to hold his own against NBA competition.
Saben Lee was grouped together with Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey, and Isaiah Stewart as the “core 4” by Troy Weaver. With that in mind Weaver seems to view Lee as a fundamental piece for this young team, and while the option for him to be sent down to the Motor City Cruise for the upcoming season, he has at least impressed general manager Troy Weaver and co to have received this this new deal. He may even make an appearance on the main roster this season for an extended time.
In an exciting and franchise shaking offseason for Detroit, the Saben Lee return should only add to the excitement that Piston fans undoubtedly already have for this team’s future.
